Land Development Code 101

The Land Development Code...

is a tool that determines how land can be used throughout Austin
.  The updating of a land development code is a basic function of any city government. All cities change, and the smart ones plan ahead for that change.

The Land Development Code...

is a tool that can help guide growth to where it can do the most good. We need to plan strategically for the future, using facts and real-life examples, to address community challenges that differ from district to district.

The Land Development Code...

needs to be updated to meet the needs and priorities of Austin today. Our last full code rewrite was in 1984. Austin's population has more than doubled in size since then, but our code has not kept pace.

The Land Development Code...

is NOT funding for a City program or service
. It's a set of rules and guidelines to direct future growth, and does not recommend or assign funding for any specific project or service.

The Land Development Code...

is NOT a Capital Improvement Plan or program
. It's a set of rules and guidelines to direct future growth, not approvals or endorsements of either City-funded or privately funded developments, roads, or projects.

The Land Development Code...

is NOT the only solution to addressing community challenges. It's just one tool in a much larger toolkit that also includes existing laws and ordinances, community and nonprofit initiatives, and more.
